Rules for Playing Volleyball. Dead Ball.

The rules for playing volleyball cover the dead ball situations that occur before, after, and between live ball situations.

From the arrival of the visiting team to the pre-match conference and accompanying warm-up procedures, these rules help set the stage for logistics such as assignment of team benches, ground rules, and who begins serving.

Before stepping onto the court, teams want to be sure of the rules that dictate rotation order. Teammates must stay aware of who serves next and when they are to rotate. The rules are very clear regarding volleyball positions and their assignments. Yet, this is one of the most common areas of violations once play begins. Players need to constantly monitor alignment prior to play beginning or risk penalties.

Time outs are an important strategy weapon for coaches. According to the rules, not just anyone can call a time out. How many different people can call a time out?

The rules limit substitutions. Improper and illegal substitutions are addressed. Have fun, now, as you tackle questions 41-60 regarding rules for playing volleyball.
