Volleyball Referees. Know all 7?

Volleyball referees are frequently called by incorrect names. Just as the referees in baseball (home plate umpire, field umpire, etc.) and football (referee, line judge, etc.) have specific names, so do the referees in volleyball.

There are several categories of “referees”. The 1st is the referee (really!). This the official standing on the raised platform.

The 2nd category is the umpire. This official stands near the official's table.

The 3rd and 4th categories are the scorer and assistant scorer.

The scorer keeps the written record of the game activities. The assistant scorer is responsible for tracking the libero movements.

The 5th and 6th categories involve the timer and assistant timer. Managing the clock is the timer's job. He may have an assistant helping him.The 7th category of "referees" is the line judges. Two line judges are needed to help the referee and umpire.

Let's see how well you do now as you tackle questions 21-40 about volleyball referees.
