Volleyball Umpire

The volleyball umpire stands at the net on the same side of the court as the team benches and official's table. The mechanics that keep the game flowing are largely handled by the umpire.

25. T F The umpire positions himself to watch the receiving team at the moment the ball is served.

26. T F The umpire alternates from one side of the net to the other continually attempting to stay on the side opposite the ball.

27. T F The umpire copies the referee's hand signals at the end of a rally.

28. T F The umpire controls the entry of the replacements during the game.

While the volleyball umpire is often thought of as a sort of second in command, he supports the referee while making many calls on his own at or near the official's table. Check and see below how you did with your answers.

27. T

28. F - The umpire controls substitutions between the attack line and the center line. Replacements are libero actions performed spontaneously between the attack line and the end line.

Many officials prefer the intense responsibility of volleyball referee position because the umpire position, while not having as heavy an impact on the point by point calls made on the floor, requires the handling of the many technical duties - substitutions, time outs, score discrepancies, etc. that require a detail-oriented person.
